Bespoke Colours – Pale Green & Pale Stone, for example

It is possible to order bespoke colours for your Galvanised Steel colour coated gutters, downpipes, hoppers and fittings, but it will add to the cost and to the delivery time.

Here we take a look at 2 colours, as an example, that you may wish to consider, each for different reasons:

  1. Pale Green RAL6021 to match a popular colour for windows, doors and conservatories, sometimes referred to as ‘Chartwell Green’

  1. Pale Stone RAL1015 to match Cotswold stone or similarly stone clad or stone constructed buildings where you’d like the downpipes to blend in with the stone façade. RAL1015 is also sometimes referred to as  as 'Ivory White'.

Note that it’s the RAL colour number that remains consistent across different manufacturers and different products.

What effect does choosing one of these bespoke colours have on the price?

As you can see from the table below, for these two colours it would cost an additional 57% on top of the price for the stocked colours: Black, Brown, Anthracite Grey, Dusty Grey and White.

These calculations have been based on the components required for a large 4 bedroomed self-build.

It just so happens that the RAL1015 - Pale Stone is the same cost as the RAL 6021 - Pale Green. They are both in the manufacturer’s price category band 2.

What effect does choosing these bespoke colours have on the delivery time?

The manufacturers require about a week to paint your system components the bespoke colour, after possibly having to ordering the powder in specifically, and we have regular weekly deliveries -  so you should allow a total of between 2-3 weeks for delivery of your bespoke colour system.

 

So, what bespoke colour do you have in mind now?

  Not every colour will be available in the powder and some colours may fall into a price category ‘band’ that costs more.

  We will need you to select the RAL or BS colour that most closely matches any colour you are considering matching to.

  We will need to know all the system components you require in order to get an accurate quotation, but remember that we can do a take-off from architect's drawings for you

70 Degree Bend with measurements

Two 72 degree bends make a ‘swan neck’ to offset the downpipe from the roofline to the wall of the building.
●   In the 80mm diameter downpipe 2 bends make a maximum of 210mm offset
●  In the 100mm diameter downpipe 2 bends make a maximum of 255mm offset

●  There is a 60mm fixed offset available in both sizes of downpipe

 

●  For any other offset between 60mm and the maximums you should pivot the ‘swan neck’ inside the downpipe to whatever distance from the wall is required to meet the outlet at the roofline. So that the running outlet or prefabricated outlet is not directly above the downpipe but set off to the side as necessary.

●  For even larger offsets, as in the case study in Aberystwyth, a cut section of downpipe can be inserted between the two bends, cut to what ever additional length is required

How to select the rigth size gutters with a flow calculation

Choosing the right size of Gutters and Downpipes

As extraordinary weather patterns become ever more regular with intense rain storms causing major challenges for rainwater disposal it has become ever more important to ensure you have the calculating right flow requirements or ‘flow capacity’ required by your property to select the right size of gutter and downpipe to adequately protect your property from rainwater.

The rainwater system, comprising gutters or hoppers and downpipes, is essential because it offers protection to your property from ingress by water to the roof, walls or foundations which can cause serious damage to the integrity of the property if it is not efficiently and effectively directing rainwater away from the building and safely into the subsurface drainage system below the building.

This guide describes what goes into a flow calculation:

Step 1: Identify the Geographical Location and Rainfall Intensity

British Standard BS EN 12056-3: 2000 contains maps showing rainfall intensity in litres/second per m2

for 1, 5, 50 and 500 year storms of 2 minute duration.

(All external gutters designed for 1 year event).

Step 2: Calculate the 'Catchment Area' of the roof

CA = (P+H/2) x L

where:
CA = Catchment area in square metres
P = Horizontal distance between eaves and ridge
H = Height of roof
L = Length of eaves

Step 3: Frequency and Positioning of outlets/downpipes

Calculate the number of outlets per run.

The roof area, the pitch of the roof and the number of ‘drops’ (downpipes coming down from outlets in the guttering around the building) determine the 'flow'.

– we need these details from you to calculate the flow capacity for you.

Step 4: Calculate Flow Requirements

Overall rainfall: Catchment area (CA) x Rainfall intensity (RI) = Overall Rainfall (OR)

Flow rate per outlet: Overall rainfall (OR) ÷ Number of outlets = Flow rate per outlet
Choose gutter/outlets according to published flow rate capacities.

Depending on building type, a safety factor should be allowed for the sizing of internal gutters.

There are the short and long back fascia brackets that you screw to the fascia board – if your property has one. The shorter back (45mm vs 75mm) brackets are more suitable where the depth of the fascia is shallower.

Rise and Fall Brackets

Rise and Fall Brackets with a drive-in spike which allow you to drive the spike into the mortar between stones but use the thread of the ‘rise and fall’ screw to keep the height of the gutters level whether or not the entry point of the spikes can be kept level.

(* N.B. the ‘Rise-and-Fall’ bracket is only available from stock in uncoated galv but price and lead times for colour coated can be arrange on request or you could choose to use the ‘touch up paint spray’ after installation).

Side-fix rafter brackets

The Side-fix rafter brackets that are screwed to the side of the rafters under the roof tiles already have the twist applied to the long shaft.

Top-fix rafter brackets

Then there are the Top-fix rafter brackets that are mounted on the roof slope or battens, under the roof tiles, by their long shaft. We can supply a Gutter Rafter Bracket bending tool tp bend our Top-fix rafter support brackets (also known as ‘hangers’) to suit the roof pitch.

Please note this tool is only to bend the brackets and not to twist them. For that requirement, we sell the ‘side-fix rafter brackets’ (see above).

Our standard galvanised Steel downpipe clip or bracket available in plain galvanised and 5 other colours (Black, Anthracite Grey, Dusty Grey, White and Sepia Brown (shown below)) and 2 sizes 80mm & 100mm fixes the downpipe with 2 screws 25mm from the wall.
Any slight variance can be accommodated with the use of wooden bobbins that can easily be cut down to a couple of mm if required.

Not held in stock but available from our manufacturers should your project require it, is the self tapping ‘Pin’ Screw and Cap with M10 threaded tip to attach it to the downpipe bracket with M10 Boss (socket) – available in 300mm, 250mm, 200mm, 140mm and 80mm lengths.

Plus the long-shaft wall plug/or dowel for the pin screw - for fastening through insulating layers -available in 280mm, 240mm and 180mm.

We obviously consider these options a more secure and robust fixing than just driving a spike into a pilot hole with a hammer.

Gutter – Alternatives: Guttering, Troughs, Channels, Gulleys

  • Our Guttering comes in 3 meter lengths with a generous, deep half-round profile incorporating an integral rolled front edge which gives it stength but also an innovative joining method
  • This 'bead' provides a decorative edge and added strength. Each of our 'gutter Connector' or ' Unions' comes with a 'bead connector' which threads half-way into the rolled front edge on adjacent lengths.
  • This together with the EPDM rubber seal in the connector means no messy silicone sealant is required.

Downpipe – Alternatives: Drainpipes, Rhones

  • Our downpipes come in 3mtre lengths with internal seams and 'swaged' joints that simply push together for a smooth, contemporary finish.
  • Available in 80mm and 100mm diameters to suite the rainfall and roof size requirements of the property

Union Connector- Alternatives: any combination of ‘connector’ or ‘union’ including ‘union connector’

As already mentioned, each of our 'Gutter Connector' or ' Union' comes with a 'bead connector', a short length of rolled steel which sits with half its length inside each of the adjacent gutter lengths' rolled front edges

  • This together with the EPDM rubber seal in the connector means no messy silicone sealant is required to seal the adjacent lengths.
  • The sprung loaded jaws are secured closed by the cut out tab which overlaps them.
  • If you have any trouble closing the jaws by hand, try repositioning the rubber seal
  • The tab can be pressed home with a gloved thumb or a tap of a rubber hammer if you prefer.

 

Warning : we do also have a downpipe 'connector' - this is only required to use up cut lengths of downpipe as it restores the swaged neck required to slot downpipe lengths together to any spare off-cuts

Outlet – Wrap-around, running outlet or ‘prefabricated’ outlet

The choice is yours!

  • Either choose the wrap around running outlet for flexibility. You can wrap it  in place anywhere along a length of guttering and then cut a hole out of the guttering to allow the rainwater to run down into the downpipes connected by their swaged neck below it.
  • Or for ease and speed, choose the prefabricated outlet to save you anything but a straight cut of a gutter length, but you will need a union/connector on either side unless the outlet sits at the end of the run and can simpley be closed off with a push fit stop-end.

  • For a basic 60mm projection we have the 60mm projection 'Fixed offset'

  • When more projection is required 2 no. 72 degree bends can be combined  and twisted to create a variety of 'offsets' from the wall.
  • When an even greater projection is required to cope with deep eaves etc. any length of downpipe can be cut and inserted between the bends to reach even further.

Brackets- Alternatives: ‘Fascia’ bracket or ‘Rafter’ bracket

As you'd expect,

  • the fascia bracket attaches to a fascia board and the gutters sit in them - there is a security tab at the back of the bracket and a bit at the front, moulded to match the rolled front-edge 'bead' mentioned before - these securely the gutters in place.
  • but for properties without fascia, there is the option of rafter brackets. These can be bent on site to match the angle of the rafters.

We sell bracket benders if required, but a vice may suffice.

Downpipe Shoe – Alternatives: Short or long heel shoe; or connecting the downpipe directly into subsurface drain pipes

Again you have a choice of 3:

  • There is the short heel shoe which kicks out 115mm from the wall (incl the standard downpipe clip/bracket*)
  • The long heel shoe - kicks out 175mm fomr the wal (incl the standard downpipe clip/bracket*)
  • Or choose to connect the downpipe directly to the 110mm diam subsurface drainage pipes with a rubber seal and a galv downpipe cover

These can be sprayed to match the downpipe with our 400ml touch up paint spray cans  (take a look here)

* We recently added a downpipe bracket with M10Boss and M10 Screws in 100, 140 and 200mm lengths -  for use when the surface of the wall you are attaching the downpipes to is uneven - you need the screw lengths to vary in order to keep the downpipe true and straight.
